What’s the weather going to do?
The Lake District weather is ever changeable, when it’s good there is no better place to be. When it’s not so good it can get pretty bad. Moss Howe Farm is located in in the South Lakes and often enjoys better weather than the rest of the Lake District. What is there to do?
The simplest answer is everything and nothing. Whatever type of break you are looking for there is something here for everyone as the Lake District has a lot to offer.
We have teamed up with outdoor activity providers and are now able to offer almost 40 different outdoor activities from rock climbing, canoeing, gorge scrambling to bushcraft and survival and many more! See the ‘Things To Do‘ section on the website for more information.
You can also go exploring the hills, valleys and lakes, taking photographs, reading, writing or just having a picnic, etc. However, if you choose to do nothing but just sit back, relax and enjoy being in a truly magical setting away from all the hustle and bustle of modern day life then that’s definitely available too.
Where is the nearest food shop?
We have a well stocked shop onsite selling all the essentials including, milk, eggs, bread, butter, fresh coffee and variety of Lake District specialties and treats so no need to go mad at the shops before you come and stay. The shop is open everyday until 8pm.

If you want to stock up before you arrive Kendal has more supermarkets than you can shake a rusty tent peg at! It’s just 11 miles from Moss Howe and has a Booths, Morrison’s, ASDA, Aldi, Lidl, M&S, Sainsbury’s. There is also a Booths in Windermere (15 miles) and a small Co-Op and Tesco local in Grange-over-Sands and a well stocked shop at the Shell petrol station on the A590.
And finally, a community store located 30 minute walk from the site in the village of Witherslack stocks a wide range of groceries, fresh and frozen food produce, local damson items, local information and a fantastic selections of homemade cakes. It’s also located right next to Derby Arms pub!

Where is the nearest pub / restaurant?
The nearest great pub is a short 30 minute walk from the site in the village of Witherslack (if walking, ask for directions from the onsite shop). It has an open fire, a great selection of local ales, good food, great atmosphere and if it’s a weekend in all likelihood there be something going on. Well worth a visit.
Further afield you are spoilt for choice with a number of equally great country pubs within a short drive. Here are a few of our recommendations;

- The Masons Arms (Strawberry Bank)
- The Brown Horse (Winster)
- The Hare and Hounds (Levens)
Kendal or Bowness on Windermere and Windermere also have a large selection of restaurants, cafes and bars to suit all tastes and budgets.
Where is the nearest bank?
The nearest banks with cash machines are in Kendal (NatWest, Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, HSBC). There are also cash machines and banks in Grange-over-Sands and Bowness.
Where is the nearest town or village?
Witherslack is about 2 miles away. A walk through the woods and along some small backroads leads straight to the village (wellies recommended). Kendal, the nearest large town is about 11 miles away. A bus runs from just off the A590 in the village every hour. Kendal boasts the fantastic Brewery Arts Centre including cinema, lots of great cafes, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budget.
Where is the nearest bus stop?
The nearest bus stop is 2 miles from the site on the edge of the village just off the A590. Buses to Kendal and Oxenholme mainline station (via Levens and Sizergh) to the west and through to Barrow via Grange, Newby Bridge and Ulverston to the east. For more information on timetables click here.
Where is the nearest Train Station?
The nearest train stations are in Oxenholme (11 miles), Windermere (15 miles), Grange-over-Sands (6.5 miles).
How safe is it to walk on the fells?
Please refer to the Lake District National Park Authority website for some useful guidelines on how to be safe whilst on the fells or alternatively go to the Kendal Mountain Rescue Team website.
Where are some good walks for families?
There are countless walks starting from the campsite which are suitable for families. A short stroll down to the village for a pint in the wonderful Derby Arms is recommended. Ask at the campsite shop for a map showing footpaths, have fun making your way through woods and take a torch if you think you may get waylaid in the pub!
An absolute must is the walk up and along the glorious Whitbarrow Scar to Lord’s Seat. A great walk for all the family and once you get up to the top it offers truly magnificent views south over Morecambe Bay and beyond (on a good day you can even make out the Blackpool Tower) to the North the beauty of the Lake District fells. The above route does depart from the village of Witherslack but you can equally walk from the campsite and leave the car at the site.
For the more adventurous and those wishing to bag some of the larger Lake District peaks the entire Lake District within easy reach here including a quick route out to the lesser visited western side of the national park.

Can we go fishing nearby?

What places are there to visit nearby?
The Witherslack site is ideally positioned that it offers easy access to both the quieter and less visited western part of the Lake District National Park and also the busier central and south Lakes.
A short drive away is Windermere and Bowness on Windermere, the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, Brockhole (ideal for families) and the village of Ambleside as well as access via the stunning Kirkstone Pass to the North Lakes.
A must is a trip to Cartmel to stock up on the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee pudding or try your luck and enjoy a day at the Cartmel Horse Races. Also just down the road is the Haverthwaite Steam Railway and the Lakeland Motor Museum.
Alternatively, take a trip into Grange-over-Sands and enjoy a stroll along the prom and take in the stunning view of Morcambe Bay. While you there treat yourself to one of the award winning homemade pies at Higginsons Butchers, a better pie we challenge anyone to find!

Which is the nearest lake?
Lake Windermere is the nearest lake to the site. The easiest place to reach the Lake is at Newby Bridge at the very southern end of England’s largest lake. From here there are great opportunities to explore the length of the lake either via bike, on foot via steamer, canoe/kayak/Stand-up paddle board or just sit and enjoy the peace the quiet with a picnic.
The site is also a short drive (18 miles) from the stunning and beautifully quiet Coniston Water. Take a dip, bring a picnic, relax in the sun it is a truly fantastic place to wind away the hours.
